Dr. Neal Barnard’s speaking schedule is jam packed, especially during the first Plant Based World Conference and Expo in NYC, and he was gracious enough to sit down with Christine Sweet, Co-founder of The Plant Based Review, to discuss his personal journey to a plant-based lifestyle and medical practice, as well as debunking common vegan myths.
During the conversation, Dr. Neal Barnard, a leading vegan doctor, clears up one of the biggest misconceptions of a whole foods plant based diet – soy estrogen. So men, have no fear, you will not gain ‘man boobs’ and women please do note that soy has a beneficial relationship to preventing breast cancer, not causing it. Such topics are covered in his latest book “Your Body in Balance: The New Science of Food, Hormones, and Health”.
As the conversation dives deeper, Dr. Neal Barnard sheds light on the lapse of nutrition and diet education in the medical community and explains what lifestyle medicine is. As a result, Dr. Neal Barnard founded the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, commonly known as PCRM, in 1985, which has since grown to have over 12,000 physicians and 175,000 members across the United States and around the world.
Throughout his work with PCRM, Dr. Neal Barnard has lead medical research studies that have gone on to be published in peer-reviewed journals with groundbreaking findings supporting the benefits of a whole food plant based diet on diabetes, body weight, and chronic pain. Additionally, PCRM is engaged in policy reform and action to promote health and wellness. Most recently their work assisted in passing the New York State legislature mandating plant-based meals to be offered to patients in all hospitals statewide.
Dr Neal Barnard thyroid research has found that a diet with no meat, dairy and fats and little salt can cure hyperthyroidism. Dr. Neal Barnard dairy studies showcase that dairy products are packed with fat and cholesterol which may increase the risk of health problems ranging from asthma to some types of cancer. Elevated risk of prostate cancer incidence and mortality has been associated with dairy consumption and the same may be true for ovarian cancer.
While on the topic of dairy, did you know that cheese is the number one food Americans are addicted to? Dr. Neal Barnard Cheese Trap explains how cheese operates as a narcotic causing the brain to call out for a cheese fix, thus coining his term “cheese crack”.
It is no surprise that Dr. Neal Barnard’s diet plan and Dr. Neal Barnard’s recipes in his New York Times top bestselling cookbook “150 Recipes Scientifically Proven to Reverse Diabetes Without Drugs” do not include any meat or dairy. Additionally, Dr. Neal Barnard’s diet plan and whole food plant based recipes can be found on the PCRM website.
Neal Barnard, MD graduated from George Washington University School of Medicine, was appointed a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology in 2015, is a published author of over a dozen books, and is the founder of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
